Wakad, a Pune suburb, is a fast-growing locality in Pune Metropolitan area. Wakad comes under the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The phenomenal growth of Wakad can rightly be attributed to Infotech and Biotechnology Park at Hinjewadi and also because Wakad lies on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway (West). Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop Project
India is soon going to be home to the first-ever working model of the Hyperloop transport project. This Hyperloop will run from the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai to Wakad in Pune, covering a distance of 117.5 km in just 23 minutes.
It is a high-speed transport system in which passengers will travel via pods which will be suspended in tubes. The air pressure in the tubes will be just nine per cent of the normal pressure above sea level. The speed at which the pods will travel within the tubes has been estimated between 500 and 1500 km per hour. This ambitious project is steadily realizing and offers unlimited growth potential to Wakad in the near future.
Smart City Project
The future of Wakad is SMART, thanks to the Smart City protocol under which the locality is being developed. Wakad, Pimple Saudagar and Pimple Gurav have been listed under the ambitious Pimpri-Chinchwad Smart City Project. The project cost is estimated to be 344.54 crores with a delivery time of 24 months. The area will have smart roads with pedestrian pathways, a bicycle path, stormwater drains, LED street lights, traffic signage, smart toilets, street landscaping work. The project also aims at redeveloping two parks. However, considering the traffic at peak hours, a traffic diversion plan needs to be created. The agency appointed to execute the project will need to obtain necessary approvals from Engineers and Traffic Authorities to work-out an action plan for the same. Work has already commenced for the project, the 750 km optical fibre network is begun to be laid.
Hinjewadi Mahalunge Road
Travelling from Wakad to Hinjewadi Phase 2 and Phase 3 in the near future is going to be more convenient with the new Hinjewadi-Mahalunge road. The PMRDA has been trying to work out decongestion of traffic in Hinjewadi IT Park for a long time. The PMRDA officials have held discussions with the affected farmers many times. They have now agreed to part with their land in lieu of transfer of development rights (TDR) and floor space index (FSI). The is a welcome relief to more than a lakh IT professionals working in Hinjewadi IT park who have to commute through the narrow Wakad, Shivaji Chowk Road every day. MIDC has commenced construction of an alternative road to link Katraj Dehu road bypass with Maan via Mahalunge village.
Metro Station at Wakad
There is a proposed Metro Station at Wakad Chowk through Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Line-3. The PMRDA will build Metro from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar which will pass over the narrow Wakad-Shivai Chowk Road. The line will pass through both Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) territories and end up at the city’s information technology hub of Hinjewadi. The Wakad METRO station, which is not too far away in the future would make it possible to travel from Wakad to interior areas of Pune city (Old Pune) a cakewalk.
Wakad is soon going to be home to a linear garden as part of the smart city project. The Municipal Commissioner has approved a proposal for a linear garden near Wakad on Pimple Nikah road. Its estimated cost will be around Rs1.6 crores. The garden will have flower beds, jogging and walking tracks, play area, arrangements for seating and an activity area. This project will take around 1.5 years for completion. There is a proposal for LED lighting, plantation & development and other horticulture activities.
PCMC is coming up with an idea of an Underground Bazaar in Pimple Saudagar near Wakad on the lines of the Palika Bazaar in Delhi. This future project attracts a cost of 45 crores. This bazaar will house 55 shops each of 275 sqft. The complex will also boast of modern amenities like escalators. The future underground bazaar in Wakad would “de-clutter” the locality.
